WordPress is efficient

  • One installation can operate any number of domains. This feature is called “Multi-Site”. It allows the administration of multiple websites via one single user interface, while the output for visitors is completely separate.
  • A theme can be used as a template by any number of child themes. That means that code and images can be reused and a logo or font can be changed with one single line of code in the parent theme.
  • A theme or plugin directory can be used by several installations concurrently. Updates can therefore be implemented quickly and economically.
  • User tables can also be used jointly by multiple installations.

WordPress is international and multilingual

  • The core system has been translated into over 70 languages. There is more than one translation available for some languages: German, for example, is available as a formal (“Sie”) and informal (“Du”) version.
  • The user can choose the admin language he speaks most fluently for each individual plugin, no matter what language is selected for the output.
  • Several pages of a Multi-Site installation can be linked via our plugin MultilingualPress in such a way that each page represents a language and alternative language outputs can be found for each individual page with the click of a button.

We have been able to achieve PageSpeed values of 99 out of a possible 100 points in some projects. These high values were achieved using various adjustments.

  • The system will automatically recognize the existence of a large user database – and will adapt database requests accordingly.
  • A flexible caching interface allows an adaptation of the caching of repeated call-ups to the exact conditions of the relevant technical environment: options here are Opcache, Objektcache, Filecache or the integration of a CDN in any combination.
  • WordPress doesn’t use sessions because they make any caching a lot harder.
  • Another special feature: Unlike many other systems, the template system uses PHP only and no other template language at all. This makes the scripts run extremely fast.

WordPress is search engine-friendly: Google loves WordPress

  • For beautiful URLs (i.e. those without question marks), WordPress offers its own UI and an internal interface: Rewrite API. You can use the latter to define your own URL patterns for any possible special scenarios.
  • Special meta data in the html header can be inserted and adjusted any way you want.
  • The same applies for XML sitemaps: Regular sitemaps or video sitemaps can be created via plugins or custom requests to the database interface.
  • A robots.txt generates WordPress automatically without plugins. You can also insert your own file or adjust the one generated by WordPress.
  • The huge developer community ensures that latest trends are implemented in WordPress very quickly.

You don’t have to pay any license fees for WordPress

  • WordPress itself is free of charge and so are many plugins and themes.
  • Experts in programming, design and for training are available virtually everywhere, because WordPress has the world’s largest developer scene of any CMS.
  • The minimal technical requirements – you only have to have at least PHP 5.2.4 and MySQL 5.0 – mean that it can be installed anywhere. There are no license fees for PHP or MySQL and both also run on open systems like Linux.

WordPress is easy to operate

  • The UI is very user-friendly and is constantly being improved. The user interface for new text creation looks like a simplified version of Word and the activation of new users, themes or plugins is completed with just a few mouse clicks.

WordPress 4.3 released

WordPress has released version 4.3 of its content management system, which is now available as an update in your dashboard.

Version 4.3 comes with several new options for easier customization — the most notable of which is the ability to modify navigation menus in the customizer.

Using the WordPress site customizer you can create menus, edit them, move menu items around, and so on, all while live previewing your changes as you go.

New formatting shortcuts have been introduced, which includes things list using asterisks (*) to create bulleted lists and number signs (#) to create headings.

WordPress has finally added the ability to customize browser icons — those little square icons that appear in browser tabs. The company has also made its platform more secure, if you forget your password WordPress will now send a reset link instead of sending a new password direct to your inbox.

A minor, but no less important change will see comments turned off on pages by default. Comments will now be confined to blog posts.

With this update one of the most widely used content management systems becomes even more user friendly. The new menu customizer will no doubt make a lot of site owner’s lives easier.

Formatting shortcuts is a useful new addition, but it’s a curious decision by WordPress to not just adopt [markdown formatting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown).

In markdown an asterisk is used to create italicized text, while in WordPress it’s used to create lists. These sorts of things may end up being confusing to WordPress users who religiously write in markdown formatting, but that’s just a small gripe about an overall sound update.

How to create a WordPress Post.

To get started creating your first WordPress post, locate the Posts menu in the left-hand side of the WordPress Dashboard. You can either hover over the Posts link or click to expand it to reveal the submenu.

The Add New Posts page can also be found from the + New link in the WordPress Admin Bar, also.

Click the Add New link.

Now you’ll see the Add New Post page where you can create your first post.

The first box is where you’ll want to enter the title of your post.

Next is the Post formatting section or post editor. This is where you’ll actually type the content of your post.

If you look on the right side of the box, you’ll see two tabs. There are two modes of editing posts: Visual and Text.

The Visual tab will bring up the visual WYSIWYG editor. WYSIWYG just means “what you see is what you get.” Here you’ll see a formatting toolbar with lots of options for formatting your posts. If you’re familiar with Microsoft Word or any other word processing software, most of these icons should look familiar.

If you click the Text tab, this will reveal a plain-text HTML version of the post editor. This version of the post editor is for editing the HTML code of your post. For most users, the Visual editor is the easiest way to write posts.

At the top of the right column on this screen you’ll see the Publish box. Here, your can save your post as a draft if you’d like to save it for later. If you click the Preview button, you can get a preview of how the post will look once it’s published.

The Status of the post will show if the post has been published, saved as a draft, if it’s pending review of if it’s been scheduled.

The next two links show the visibility of the post — or what visitors will be able to see your post. The Publish line shows whether the post will be published immediately or at a later date.

The next section are for categories and tags assigned to your WordPress post. We’ll cover these two topics in more detail later.

If you’d like to change the screen options for your post editor, just click the screen options tab in the upper right hand corner. Expand this to reveal all the options that can be displayed on the post editor screen.

Again from the post editor, you can also drag or drop the order of these boxes to customize how we want them arranged on the page.

If you ever need help while you’re on the Add New Posts page, just click the Help tab in the upper right corner. From here, you’ll be able to get a reminder for how to customize your post display, tips for adding a post title and using the post editor, inserting media and settings for publishing and discussion.

WordPress Post versus Pages

When it comes to creating content for your WordPress site, you have the option to choose between creating either a post or page. Both have their respective uses and can add very dynamic elements to your site.

WordPress Posts vs Pages

A WordPress post is what makes up the blog aspect of your site.

  • These are generally news or informational updates about a certain topic or talking point.
  • Posts are listed in reverse chronological order and can be tagged, categorized and even archived on your site.
  • WordPress posts are what make up the RSS content of your WordPress blog. So, when someone subscribes to your RSS feed, your posts will be the content that’s delivered to them.
  • Think of the posts at the news portion of your site. They’re dynamic and constantly changing the content your end users sees.

WordPress Pages are similar to posts in that they have a title and body text, but they are different because:

  • they are generally reserved for static content or information.
  • Examples of this would be an About Me or Contact Us page.
  • Pages are not listed by date and can’t be categorized or tagged like WordPress posts,
  • Pages can have a hierarchy, which means you can nest pages under other pages by making one the “Parent” of the other, thus creating a group of pages.
  • Due to their static nature, pages aren’t included in RSS feeds and won’t have date or time publishing
