How to Track Conversions using Google Tag Manager

This service includes professional installation and configuration of Google Tag Manager on your website so you can manage tracking scripts, marketing tags, and analytics tools easily from one place.

Google Tag Manager allows businesses to control tracking pixels and analytics tags without needing to edit website code every time.

What I will do:

  • Create or connect a Google Tag Manager account and container
  • Install the GTM container code on your WordPress site the right way (no duplicate or conflicting snippets), and confirm it is firing correctly using GTMs preview/debug mode and Tag Assistant
  • If you choose the GA4 install extra, install GA4 tracking separately on your site and verify that data is coming through correctly in GA4

What I need from you:

  • WordPress admin access
  • Access to your Google Tag Manager account by adding me as a temporary user. I can help you create a GTM container if you don’t already have one.
  • If you chose the GA4 install extra, access to your Google Analytics account by adding me as a temporary user. I can help you create a GA4 property if you don’t already have one.

FAQ

Do you need my Google account password?
No. I will ask you to add me as a temporary user to your Google Tag Manager account and, if you ordered the GA4 install extra, to your Google Analytics account. If you prefer, you can just send me your GTM Container ID and GA4 Measurement ID instead. You should never share your password.

Why do you need WordPress admin access?

I need admin access so I can safely add or update your Google Tag Manager code, check your existing plugins or theme settings, and test that GTM is working properly. I will only change what is required for this work and nothing else on your site.

Will this work with any WordPress theme or builder?
Yes. I work with most major themes and page builders. If you have a very custom setup, send me a message, and I will confirm before you order.

Can you help if I already have GTM installed but it is a mess?
Yes. I can check for duplicate or outdated tags and clean it up for you. Just send me a message before you order with details, and I’ll confirm if the original gig price will cover your current issues.

What is Google Tag Manager (GTM)?

Demystifying Google Tag Manager: Your Website’s Marketing Maestro

In the complex world of online marketing, where tracking conversions, understanding user behavior, and optimizing campaigns is paramount, the sheer number of code snippets and tracking pixels can quickly become overwhelming. This is where Google Tag Manager (GTM) steps in, offering a centralized and efficient solution to manage all your website’s tracking and analytics tags.

What is Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager is a free tool provided by Google that allows you to manage all the tracking and analytics tags on your website from a single, centralized interface. Tags are essentially small pieces of code that collect data about user behavior and send it to various platforms, such as Google Analytics, Facebook, LinkedIn, and more. GTM provides a user-friendly interface where you can create, edit, and deploy these tags without having to directly modify your website’s code.

The Problem it Solves: The Mess of Tag Management

Before GTM, adding tags to a website was a cumbersome and time-consuming process. Each time you wanted to add a new tracking pixel or an analytics tag, you had to ask your developers to manually insert the code into the appropriate pages of your website. This approach had several drawbacks:

  • Dependency on Developers: Every change required developer intervention, leading to delays and potential miscommunication.

  • Code Clutter: Over time, your website’s code could become cluttered with numerous disjointed tags, making it difficult to maintain and manage.

  • Risk of Errors: Manual code insertion increases the risk of errors, which can impact data accuracy and website performance.

  • Limited Control: Marketers had limited control over when and how tags were fired, making it difficult to implement advanced tracking scenarios.

How Google Tag Manager Works

GTM works by injecting a single, master container snippet into your website’s code. This container acts as a central hub that manages all other tags. You can then add, edit, and deploy individual tags within the GTM interface, and GTM will dynamically inject them into your website based on specific conditions or triggers.

The key components of GTM include:

  • Container: This is the core of GTM. It’s a single snippet of code that you install on all pages of your website.

  • Tags: These are the tracking or analytics codes you want to deploy, such as Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, and Google Ads conversion tracking.

  • Triggers: These define when a tag should fire. Triggers can be based on events like page views, button clicks, form submissions, and more.

  • Variables: These store and retrieve data about user actions and other information, which can be used in triggers and tags.

The Benefits of Using Google Tag Manager

Implementing GTM on your website offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Centralized Management: Manage all your tracking tags from a single, user-friendly interface.

  • Faster Deployment: Add and deploy new tags without having to rely on developers, reducing turnaround time for marketing campaigns.

  • Improved Data Accuracy: Ensure data consistency and accuracy by managing all tags from a single source.

  • Advanced Tracking Capabilities: Implement complex tracking scenarios like e-commerce tracking, event tracking, and user behavior analysis.

  • Testing and Debugging: GTM provides robust testing and debugging tools to ensure tags are working correctly before deploying them live.

  • Version Control: GTM allows you to track changes to your container and easily revert to previous versions if needed.

  • Security and Permissions: Control who has access to your GTM container and assign different permission levels.

When to Use Google Tag Manager

While GTM is a powerful tool, it’s not suitable for every website. If you have a simple website with minimal tracking needs, direct code insertion might be more efficient. However, GTM is highly recommended for:

  • Websites with multiple tracking tags: If you use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, Google Ads, and other marketing tools, GTM will simplify your life.

  • E-commerce websites: GTM is essential for tracking e-commerce transactions and gathering valuable data about customer behavior.

  • Websites that require advanced tracking: If you want to track specific user interactions like button clicks, form submissions, and video views, GTM is the ideal solution.

  • Marketing teams that need speed and agility: GTM empowers marketers to deploy and update tags without relying on developers, allowing them to iterate and optimize campaigns faster.

In conclusion, Google Tag Manager is an indispensable tool for modern marketers and website owners. By simplifying tag management, increasing speed and agility, and improving data accuracy, GTM allows you to focus on what matters most: using data to optimize your website and drive business growth. If you haven’t already, implement GTM on your website today and experience the difference it can make.
