High School, University, College students: Rent your textbooks! Sell your used textbooks!
With the rising cost of tuition and growing environmental sensitivity, a new business model has taken the scene to help high school and university students manage their textbook expenses. Although it has always been possible to buy used textbooks online and offline, the concept of renting textbooks provides an even cheaper way to acquire needed course materials. At the same time, renting books keeps them in circulation longer and thus reduces the environmental footprint that each book leaves.
In a very similar style to extremely popular Video and DVD Rental-NetFlix, customers of this website such at rentabook.co.za are receiving their books in the mail with pre-paid return envelopes or labels. When their semester or term is over, they simply send it back to the company.
If you copy the last few chapters of your textbook and return the book early so you don’t forget you can even save on the already low rental fees. Keep a copy of the printed return label inside the book, this way, you can slap it into one of those mailing envelopes and be done with it.
We are here to help students save money, and also as a consequence save the world’s environment. We’re tired of publishers taking advantage of their monopoly position in the market to extort students with limited access to resources from a planet with limited resources. Student loans are not the answer but saving money is!
Rentabook.co.za also offers a student-to-student rental program, where students can place their own textbooks for rent. Shields believes that this is the next step to reducing the cost of textbooks as a whole. Students will now have two new choices that they never had before. They can rent textbooks at a reduced price, or they buy their own textbooks and rent them out as a way to minimize their cost, even to the point of making a profit if they so desire.
According to the United Nations Environmental Programme, “20 million trees are being cut down every year to produce paper for books sold in the U.S. alone.” Only a small percentage of current consumption is re-used. If each book was rented or resold once, that would reasonably result in the preservation of 10 million trees.
Rentabook.co.za has only recently been launched and therefor is dependend on YOUR Support. The more Users join and list their Used or New Books the more Students can benfit from this new Business Model.

The development of a multi-billion-rand eco-tourism resort outside Jeffreys Bay will finally get under way after the provincial government handed over a prime piece of land to the Kouga Development Agency (KDA), says The Herald.
The development will take place on 683ha of the agency’s mandate area north of Jeffreys Bay. The land includes 153ha of an unproclaimed nature reserve. The KDA last year adopted a master plan for the development, but could not award the tender for it before land agreements with the provincial government were finalized. Full report in The Herald
Yesterday the custodians of the land – the departments of economic development and environmental affairs, as well as housing and local government – officially handed over the agency‘s mandate area to the KDA.
Newly appointed KDA CEO Khunjulwa Manzi also made her first public appearance at the hand-over function in East London last night. She fills the shoes of former CEO Zola Tshefu.
The next step for the agency will be to award the tender for the resort to one of three short- listed companies.
The KDA‘s vision for the project is to shape the socio-economic status of the Kouga community.
According to the KDA‘s master plan a minimum of 1720 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the project, and 347 jobs during the operational phase.
Housing and Local Government MEC Thokozile Xasa said: “We look forward to the KDA‘s expertise being brought to bear on this land that would result in conditions where our people extract benefits from this land.”
She was optimistic that job opportunities would be created, unemployment reduced and people would gain a sense of hope.
